New trends
The latest Land Matrix results must be understood as snapshots in time from a dynamic database – the actual figures vary on a daily basis. Nevertheless, several interesting trends may be discerned: The data confirm, for example, that large-scale land acquisitions are indeed a global phenomenon, but show that sub-Saharan Africa is particularly affected. Major investors include OECD countries, especially the US and the UK, but developing countries – Malaysia and India, for example – make up the biggest investor group. China, by contrast, currently plays a smaller role than is often assumed. Yet another trend: Biofuel production plays an important role among the uses of agricultural land subject to investment, however food production accounts for a larger share.
